Our four most popular group trips are detailed below and for your convenience are summarised in the attached table [table to follow shortly].  However, any trip – one way or return – is possible. In all cases, with prior booking, we can offer light refreshments on the train to groups.

Trip 1 – Lower Wensleydale – one way trip

12 miles, approximately 40 minutes

This is a one-way trip along the lower part of Wensleydale, from Leeming Bar (close to the A1) to Leyburn, or from Leyburn to Leeming Bar.

During the trip passengers can be served pre-booked light refreshments at their seats and enjoy great views of lower Wensleydale.  As the train passes through the rolling countryside they may see deer, rabbits and pheasants; they will catch a glimpse of Middleham Castle on the approach to Leyburn and they will pass through the old stations along the route as well as the current stations at Finghall – used in the filming of All Creatures Great and Small – and Bedale.

At the beginning or end of the trip there will be an opportunity to visit one of our well-stocked gift shops at Leeming Bar or Leyburn. The whole trip takes approximately 40 minutes.

Trip 2 – Lower Wensleydale – return trip with a break in Leyburn

24 miles, approximately four hours

This trip comprises the same journey as in trip 1, but starts from Leeming Bar
only.  A forty-minute journey takes passengers to Leyburn station, from where it is a short walk (about ten minutes) into the market town of Leyburn with its shops, cafés and restaurants, or a shorter walk in the opposite direction to Tennants Auctioneers (specialist sale days) and the Business Park (Little Chocolate Shop, The Teapottery, Violin Making Workshop). The return journey is made approximately 2½ hours after arrival at Leyburn station, giving about two hours to explore Leyburn.

The whole trip takes just under four hours. Passengers can be served with pre-booked light refreshments at their seats during either leg of the trip.

At the beginning, middle or end of the trip there will be an opportunity to visit one of our well-stocked gift shops at Leeming Bar or Leyburn. The whole trip takes approximately four hours.

Trip 3 – The whole line – one way

22 miles, approximately 1¼ hours

This trip comprises the same journey as in trip 1, but with an additional run from Leyburn to the end of the line at Redmire, and then back to Leyburn. This trip is best started at Leeming Bar (close to the A1) and ended at Leyburn although the reverse direction is also possible.  Passengers can be served with pre-booked light refreshments at their seats during the trip.

Beyond Leyburn the dale scenery takes a marked change. On emerging from the cutting to the west of the station, the full splendour of mid-Wensleydale can be seen. Long views across the dale to Penhill are possible and the outlook from Redmire station is one of the best views in the dales. The train waits at Redmire for nine minutes, allowing a photo-opportunity, before starting its journey back to Leyburn.

At the beginning or end of the trip there will be an opportunity to visit one of our well-stocked gift shops at Leeming Bar or Leyburn. The whole trip takes approximately 1¼ hours.

Trip 4 – The whole line – return trip

34 miles, approximately two hours

This trip comprises the whole of our line and is best started and finished at Leeming Bar (close to the A1). Passengers can be served with pre-booked light refreshments at their seats during the trip.

After leaving Leeming Bar, the train takes you through Bedale to Leyburn and then to Redmire, as described in trips 1 and 3 above. After a nine minute wait at Redmire, it returns to Leeming Bar.

At the beginning or end of the trip there will be an opportunity to visit our well stocked gift shop at Leeming Bar. The whole trip takes approximately two hours.

There is also the possibility of walking from Redmire and catching a later train. There are intervals of approximately two hours between trains: see our timetable for full details.
